Assisi A splendid jewel of medieval Umbria. lies on the rivers Chascio & Topino on the western side of Mount Subasio. It covers 18,000 hectares. During the Renaissance it was ruled by various lords and became part of the Papal State at the end of the 16th Century. St. Francis, born 1182 who fought for to defend Assisi before receiving a message from God in1206, to rebuild his church. His works, life and preaching make him one of our favorite saints. He died on 3 October 1226. In July 1228 Francis was canonized by Pope Gregory IX, the same year that the first stone was laid to build the Basilica in his honor which was adorned by artist such as Cimabue, Lorenzetti and Giotto. The body of St. Francis is in the crypt of the Basilica. St. Clare born 1193 in Assisi of noble family. In 1211 at the Portiuncula, Clare, with the Bishop's authorization is consecrated as a nun by Francis. Thus begun the Order of the Poor Clares. Clare lived with her community in the monastery of St. Damian until her death in 1253. Clare was canonized by Pope Alexander IV in 1255. A Basilica was built in her honour and her body entombed there in October 1260.
